What is Pulse?
Pulse Radio is the official station of the LSE Students’ Union run by students and for students. Broadcasting online and across campus, we bring you the best current and future hits as well as a mouthwatering selection of specialist programmes. Our live programming runs from 11am through to 9pm and you can hear the latest student news and travel updates on the hour every hour.
We broadcast live from our studio at the heart of LSE’s East Building in the centre of London, equipped with a 6 foot beanbag begging to be sat on. Come visit.
Pulse Radio began life on February 1st 1999. Initially, the station broadcast for four month periods on a restricted FM license, but has since moved to a purely online setup. It pioneered the first 'On Demand' service for a student radio station and each show continues to be available for the full week following its broadcast date on the dedicated Houghton Street Factual website.
The radio station has also amassed its fair share of awards and notable interviewees or alumni over the years. In 2005 Pulse won the Guardian 'Student Website of the Year'. Over the years, interviews have been done with big names such as Jon Snow, Jacqui Smith, Clare Short, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, DJ Yoda and Kim Campbell. In terms of alumni, former Station Manager Stacy-Marie Ishmael now works as a reporter for the Financial Times, and former Head of Tech Phil Hutchinson is now working as a BBC Studio Manager at both 5Live and the World Service.
Back in 2006, Pulse also began what has since been dubbed RAGATHON during which members of the Pulse Committee remain on campus to broadcast 24 hours a day for an entire week. What started out as a one off has since become an annual event and helps raise a considerable amount for charity each year.
Here's to hoping this will be another great year!
On Air - Radio shows need radio DJs. Fact. Don't worry though, it’s not that scary! We're always on the look out for entertaining new people to take to the airwaves and all kinds of shows are welcome, from funny daytime chatter to obscure niche music.
Judge Jules at PulseOff Air - Still, if live broadcasting freaks you out then there's still plenty to get involved with off air. Our news team is always after fresh interviews and if you're interested in producing and DJing then come see our music and production teams for anything from composing jingles to playing at club nights. Those of you that think your analytical, business mind can push our radiowaves into the face of the public at large, our marketing and business teams want you. And finally, for those of you with the rarest skills of all, skills indispensable to the running of a damn good radio station: nerdy tech guys, we love you! Please come chat to our tech and web teams!
There is definitely something for everyone at Pulse Radio so even if it's just a wild social life you're after, feel free to drop by the studio or check out our contacts page to get in touch.
