Frank Turner's 3rd studio album: 'Poetry of the Deed'...

The 2008 release of the second album, "Love Ire & Song” grabbed the attention of alternative music stations Radio 1 and X-fm back in January this year, the single “Reasons Not To Be An Idiot” heralded the support of a new crop of folk-loving-indie-crowd: flinging the former LSE student from out of the underground to new pastures such as playing ‘Reading & Leeds’ festivals and collaborating with Grammy nominated producer Alex Newport, (who’s worked with ‘Death Cab For Cutie’ and  ‘At the Drive-In’ to name but a few), on his third studio album “Poetry of the Deed.”

The new album opens with punchy and lyrically exciting songs with undertones of political and cultural awareness coupled with boisterous wording and a very much appreciated harmonica solo. Continuity with his older work can be heard from early on, but, it’s evident Turner is trying produce a ‘bigger’, more serious sound in pushing his music in the direction of the electric guitar. Perhaps it was playing across the US with ‘The Offspring’ and the influence of Newport that has left a 90’s pop-punk residue all over the album. This well-crafted ‘new sound’ adds musical depth to the album: yet, in gaining more clout, it has lost its rawness, once comparable with the likes of ‘Mumford and Sons’; and at times can sound a bit ‘dad rock.’

Without a doubt Turner has once again put a lot of himself into writing “Poetry of the Deed.” His songs all stress the importance of “living fast and dying old,” or in other words, enjoying the good things in life: be it in singing about beer fuelled picnics with friends, family, and of course travelling-brilliantly highlighted in the ‘anthem’ of summer 09’ “The Road.” Throughout the new album the singer-songwriter has put to good use the mixture of lively, emotive slower songs and acoustic versions of his new produce (at the end of the album), into a well flowing, and varied in tempo album, which compensates his highly stylised and rather ‘samey’ sound. In giving the lyrics of this album a bit of attention you’ll see what I mean when I say “Poetry of the Deed” is a ‘grower’. Overall, the personal philosophies and character of the Turner expressed through the third album is refreshing, not just for the old Frank fans but also for the uprising of new support that has just sold out his London show next year!

Poetry of the Deed was released on September the 8th of this year on Xtra Mile recordings/Epitaph Records.

UK tour begins March 2010.
