Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 11:00PM The first release from Bombay Bicycle Club’s remarkable debut album, ‘I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose’, firmly cements the North London quartet’s place at the top of the British indie music scene. A long time had elapsed devoid of an album release following the band’s projection into the spotlight in 2006, as one of the most talked about newcomers in the country, leaving sceptics to wonder whether the hype had got too much. Produced by none other than Jim Abbiss, the man responsible for the critically acclaimed Arctic Monkeys debut ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’, the Crouch End boys were arguably facing a rather insurmountable expectation to live up to. ‘Always Like This’ however, is a fitting backlash to such critics, proving the four-piece haven’t lost any of the energy which got them caught in the middle of such furore in the first place.
‘Always Like This’ is an ambitious record, that wouldn’t sound out of place if it were made by a band with twice the experience of the London newcomers. The single, born out of the band’s love of dance music perfectly captures the surprising rate at which B.B.C.’s song writing is evolving. Although at times it resembles indie’s answer to Aphex Twin, with their infectious mix of indie-rock, ‘Always Like This’ really hits the spot. It features a clever mix of electronical elements, a mouth-watering bass led groove and one catchy melody! Steadman’s impressive wavering vocals really top it off.
Filled with youthful, gutsy ambition, ‘Always Like This’ doesn’t disappoint. A must-listen for anyone who likes a sunny beat to jiggle along to. Whether or not Bombay Bicycle Club are to your personal taste, ‘Always Like This’ certainly paints a bright future for the North London indie sensations.
Out now on Island Records
